The History
Zenobia ruled Palmyra in the name of her son after the death of her husband, Odaenathus. She expanded Palmyrene control from Syria into Egypt and much of Asia Minor, establishing an independent Roman-style empire with Palmyra as its capital. Emperor Aurelian reconquered the territory and captured her in 272 AD.
The Legacy
Zenobia endures as a symbol of sovereign ambition, political intelligence, and a woman’s refusal to accept a narrow place in imperial history.
