The History

Doris “Dorie” Miller was born in Waco, Texas, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939. During the attack on Pearl Harbor aboard USS West Virginia, he helped move wounded sailors and manned an antiaircraft gun despite having no formal training on the weapon. He received the Navy Cross for his heroism and was later lost when USS Liscome Bay was torpedoed in 1943.

The Legacy

Miller’s actions challenged the limits imposed on Black sailors and made him an enduring symbol of courage, service, and sacrifice under fire.
